Building Beautiful Smiles: Why Pediatric Dental Care Matters from the Start

When you’re a parent, you want to celebrate all of your child’s first moments, including his or her first steps, first words, and first baby tooth. Did you know that your child’s first tooth is an important building block for his or her future oral health? At Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics of Midland Park, we believe that dental care for children should go beyond routine checkups. We want to help children build positive dental habits that last a lifetime.

When Should My Child Have His or Her First Dental Visit?

In accordance with the latest guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, we recommend scheduling your child’s first visit within six months of the first tooth coming in. Your child should visit a dentist no later than his or her first birthday. Early visits make it easier for us to monitor your child’s dental development and perform cleanings and other preventive care. We’ll also provide tips on brushing techniques, nutrition, and steps you can take to optimize your child’s oral health at home.

What Happens During a Pediatric Dental Appointment?

During your child’s first visit with us, comfort is our top priority. We’ll perform a gentle exam of your child’s mouth, count his or her teeth, and check for signs of tooth decay and other issues. This visit is a wonderful opportunity for parents to ask questions. Here are some of the most common questions we receive from parents:

  • Should I be concerned if my child uses a pacifier or sucks his or her thumb?
  • What is the most effective way for me to brush my child’s teeth?
  • What foods and drinks should we avoid to prevent cavities?

Our team members go out of their way to create a friendly, stress-free environment. Your child will look forward to every appointment!

Preventing Tooth Decay in Children

Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease in children. Fortunately, most tooth decay can be prevented with professional cleanings, sealants, fluoride treatments, and expert guidance on taking care of your child’s teeth at home.

To protect your child’s tiny teeth before problems start, we recommend that you avoid putting your baby to bed with a bottle. Limiting sugary snacks and drinks will also help to reduce your child’s risk of developing cavities.

Why Should I Choose a Pediatric Dentist for My Child?

After graduating from dental school, pediatric dentists receive at least two years of specialized training in children’s dental care. They are trained to treat children from infancy through adolescence, and have the expertise to treat pediatric patients with anxiety, special needs, and complex dental issues. Our dental clinics are designed to be relaxing and fun spaces for kids.

Let’s Make Dental Appointments Enjoyable!

At Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics of Midland Park, our mission is to help children develop lifelong trust in dental care. While we’re building healthy smiles, we’re also helping your child feel comfortable and confident at every visit.
